Fatal neglect for little Lauren McConniel

Red flags

Potential red flags that Lauren McConniel was being abused were presented to Ball Memorial Hospital, Southway Urgent Care Center, St. Vincent Randolph Hospital and Meridian Services during multiple visits between Nov. 19 and March 2. They included:

  • Soap in the eyes.
  • Broken right fingers from jumping on the bed.
  • Burning urination.
  • The father reporting that Lauren’s vaginal area did not look normal.
  • The child knocking herself in the head with her fist while being examined.
  • Malnutrition.
  • A head injury caused by falling.
  • Weight loss.
  • Reports of bizarre behavior, such as regressing to wearing diapers, hiding food and scissors as weapons in her diapers, and eating her own vomit and feces.Source: Affidavit of probable cause to arrest Ryan and Brittany McConniel.
