CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Cape Coral police have arrested a man on charges of aggravated child abuse. The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Pablo Rico, is accused of using a cigarette to intentionally burn a 5-year-old girl.

The case unfolded on March 23, when the Department of Children and Families contacted the Cape Coral Police Department in reference to a complaint received from the girl’s school.

Police say that suspicions arose after the girl was late to school; she told one of her teachers that she had to keep the top of her dress up to hide the three burn marks on her upper chest.

According to police reports, “the girl told the teacher that Rico had burned her with a cigarette and told her not to tell anyone.”

Investigators learned that Rico was a family friend and the girl spent the weekend at the suspect’s home. When confronted by authorities, the suspect said that the girl had sustained burns as the result of a mishap involving cooking oil.
