Coroner astounded at number of abuse reports

The coroner in the Kahui inquest has expressed amazement about the number of suspected child abuse cases reported to Child, Youth and Family. “This coroner was astounded to read that in the last year there were 110,000 notifications. That’s unbelievable, isn’t it?” Garry Evans asked Children’s Commissioner John Angus yesterday. Dr Angus said reports of child abuse to Child, Youth and Family had risen rapidly in the past few years, because of greater public awareness and a shift in police practice, reflecting a new understanding of harm done to children in cases of abuse.

By the time you finish reading this, 15 children will have been abused; In the next five minutes, 30 more; Within the next hour, 360 more; And by tonight, close to 8,000+ children will have suffered from abuse, 5 of which will die. Child abuse has increased 134% since 1980 and is now considered a worldwide epidemic. The high jump in child abuse deaths and the shocking increase in statistics highlights the frightening lack of public knowledge.
