Dreamcatchers For Abused Children Store

Cache County » $1.5B spent by state yearly on ramifications of abuse.

Logan » There were 237 too many sets of shoes on the steps of the Cache County Courthouse on Thursday. Each small pair represented a case of child abuse substantiated in 2009 in Utah’s northernmost county, where the Steppin’ Up for Children display marked the first day of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Terryl Warner, Cache County victim services coordinator, said the tiny sandals, scuffed cowboy boots and colorful tennis shoes arranged by the Child & Family Support Center of Cache County are important evidence for the public.

“The community needs to be aware of the struggles that families have with child abuse and the devastation it causes, for the children especially,” Warner said.

Cache County Attorney James Swink told nearly 100 community leaders, social workers, law enforcement officers, students, parents and children in attendance that he has seen the damaging effects of violent games, television shows, movies and books time and time again in Juvenile Court, where many cases involve youth-on-youth violence.

“All adults, not just parents, need to get involved in the lives of young people to help reduce the number of shoes on these steps,” Swink said.
